What Is BMI?

Learn what Body Mass Index (BMI) is, how it is calculated, and what the results mean for assessing weight categories.

August 6, 2026

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a numerical value calculated from a person's weight and height. It is one of the most commonly used screening tools to categorize individuals into weight status categories — underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese. BMI provides a quick, inexpensive way to assess potential health risks associated with body weight.

How BMI Is Calculated

BMI is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (BMI = kg/m2). For those using imperial measurements, the formula is weight in pounds multiplied by 703, divided by height in inches squared (BMI = lb x 703 / in2). For example, a person who weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 m tall has a BMI of 22.9.

BMI Categories

The World Health Organization defines these BMI categories: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5-24.9), Overweight (25-29.9), and Obese (30 and above). These categories help identify potential health risks, though they are general guidelines rather than definitive diagnoses.

Limitations of BMI

BMI has several important limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass — athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI despite being healthy. It does not account for fat distribution, which is important since abdominal fat carries higher health risks. BMI may also be less accurate for elderly individuals, pregnant women, and people of certain ethnic backgrounds.
